Upon completion of prerequisite coursework in the Cardiovascular Technology program at Eastern International College, all students are required to complete a 14-credit, 630-hour externship. Whether you’re looking into applying at EIC or getting ready for your final semester, here are a few things you should know about the Cardiovascular Technology Externship.
Will there be an orientation?
Yes. At the beginning of the semester in which you participate in the Cardiovascular Technology Externship, the course will meet for one day for a mandatory externship orientation. This comprehensive classroom orientation session will go over everything you need to know prior to your first day at your externship. Led by the Clinical Coordinator and Externship Administrator the orientation will also review what’s expected of you in a professional lab setting, as well as attendance polices and dress code.
Where and when will my externship take place?
Sites may include laboratories, imaging facilities and/or private office settings. Externship site availability varies, and as a result, they can take place any time during the day.
What can I expect to learn from my externship?
At EIC, we strive to prepare you for entry-level jobs in your field. As such, our Cardiovascular Technology Externship allows you to perform noninvasive adult echocardiography exams under the direct supervision of a qualified technologist and/or physician to help you gain valuable, real-world knowledge. During the course of your externship, you’ll also learn how to:
- Prepare a room and equipment for an echocardiogram
- Thoroughly and properly explain the procedure to a patient
- Correctly position a patient for examination
- Operate ultrasound equipment
- Perform an array of echocardiographic procedures
- And more…
