Where Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Are Needed Most

If you’re thinking about enrolling in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program at Eastern International College, you may be wondering about your future career. For instance: what’s the job outlook? Where are ultrasound technologists needed most? The good news is, you’ve picked a great career path.

Between 2016 and 2026, the diagnostic medical sonography field is expected to grow 17%, adding 21,100 new jobs. That’s according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The federal agency also outlined the largest employers of ultrasound technologists for 2016. Here’s where diagnostic medical sonographers can find work.

Hospitals

It may come as no surprise that hospitals were the biggest employers of diagnostic medical sonographers in 2016. That’s because sonograms are used to diagnose a myriad of medical conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, digestive system, reproductive system and more. While state, local and private hospitals are currently the top employers of ultrasound techs at 60%, you can expect more job openings in outpatient facilities as imaging technology continues to advance and replace more costly procedures.

Physicians’ Offices and Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories

At 21% and 11% respectively, physicians’ offices and medical and diagnostic laboratories come in second and third place for the top employers of diagnostic medical sonographers. Again, these percentages are expected to grow as an increasing number of procedures are capable of being performed outside of hospitals.

Outpatient Care Centers

Rounding out the list of the largest employers of ultrasound techs, outpatient care centers are seeing a rising need for diagnostic medical sonographers. These facilities offer an affordable alternative to costly inpatient care, and as a result, the country has seen tremendous growth in outpatient care in the past 20 years.
